Definition of a Muslim



It should suffice to 'legally' declare/consider someone a Muslim if he/she makes the following declaration:
"I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad (p.b.u.h) is His last and final Messenger. I solemnly vow to submit, surrender and yield to all of Allah's Laws and Commands as given in His last and Final Book, i. e. the Quran. I realize that in the Hereafter, I shall surely be held accountable in Allah's Court for all of my words and deeds."

The first sentence of the declaration is about the major beliefs; the second is about deeds; and the third is about a sense of accountability.
All the other things which may be necessary to include in the definition are covered in submitting to Allah's all commands given in the Quran.

The Blessed Societies and the Nations


Different people have different notions of blessings but as far as the Quran is concerned, it has mentioned the following notable signs of the truly blessed societies and nations:
1.       Peace and security for all the people (with no fear of harm from others)[1]
2.       Abundance in provision of the means of subsistence for all the people (with no fear of hunger)[2]
3.       Social harmony (instead of dissension and discord)[3]
4.       Sovereignty (instead of slavery and servitude)[4]
5.       Predominance in excellence over the contemporaries[5]

The Quran, Secularism and the Religious Freedom


Although Ibn Rushd  (d. 1198 AD) is arguably considered the father of the secular thought in Western Europe, the term ‘secularism’ was coined by an Atheist English Writer, George Jacob Holyoake in 1851, as a replacement of the then negatively perceived term ‘atheism’[1]. Ibn Rushd put forth the idea that there are at least two paths to reach the Ultimate truth, i.e. Philosophy and Religion, implying that one can find the ultimate truth without necessarily resorting to Religion. On the similar lines, Holyoake sought to promote a social order separate from religion, without actively criticizing or dismissing the religious belief itself.
The phrase "separation of church and state" can be traced back to a letter written by Thomas Jefferson in 1802 to Baptists from Danbury, Connecticut, referencing the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. The letter says: “Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof’, thus building a wall of separation between Church & State.”[2]
According to the first Amendment of the United States Constitution, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...[3].
As far as the establishment of religion is concerned, the Quran says, “He (Allah) has ordained for you all, the same System of Life that He enjoined upon Noah - And We have revealed to you (O Muhammad) the same Message as We enjoined upon Abraham, Moses, and Jesus: ‘Establish the Divine System of Life (in which the obedience is only to Allah’s Law or Command) and make no sects in it’.”[4] The Quran also says that those who do not judge or rule according to what Allah has revealed are the Disbelievers[5]. It is clear from the Quran that when the Believers/Muslims gain power in the land, it is incumbent upon them to establish the Divine Code of Life instead of the secular system[6].
As far as free exercise of religion is concerned, the Quran says categorically that There is absolutely no compulsion or coercion in (opting for a particular) Deen (or a way of life or a system of beliefs and actions)”[7]. The Quran also warrants full security and protection for the places of worships of all religions[8].
In short, while on one hand the Quran make it incumbent on the Believers to establish the Divine code of life for them and not a secular system, on the other hand it guarantees full freedom of exercise of all the other religions by their followers, and security and protection for their places of worships.

Make Peace and Reconciliation among the Contending Believers

Differences are inevitable among human beings. However, if two groups of believers (i.e. two families, two relatives, two neighbours, two parties, two ethnic groups, two countries, etc. or two individuals) fall out and fight each other, then make peace and reconciliation among them (instead of staying indifferent, or adding fuel to the fire). And should one of them commit aggression against the other, then fight the aggressor till it complies with Allah’s Command (and turns to peace and reconciliation). Then if it complies, then make peace between the fighting factions with equity and be just and impartial. Surely Allah loves those who do justice. The Believers are but a single brotherhood. So (it is your duty to) make peace and reconciliation between your two (contending) brothers. [Al-Quran Sura 49: Verses 9-10]

Perpetual Video-recording of Our Deeds

When the Earth will be shaken with a tremendous tremor, and the Earth will bring forth its entire burden (i.e. all the buried therein) and the mankind will cry out: “what is the matter with it?” On that day it will narrate all its records of events (pertaining to every action done on it, good or evil, open or secret), because your Lord would have transmitted it; On that day mankind will come forth in various groups so that they may be SHOWN (the video-recording of) all their deeds and actions; then whoever would have done an atom’s weight of good, shall SEE it; and whoever would have done an atom’s weight of bad thing, shall SEE it. [Al-Quran Sura 99: Verses 1-8]
Then he, whose balance (of good deeds) will be heavy, will have a life of pleasure and satisfaction. But he, whose balance (of good deeds) will be light, will have an abode in a bottomless pit. And what will make you understand what that bottomless pit is? It is terribly hot fire. [Al-Quran Sura 101: Verses 6-11]

Business Ethics

If you are involved in a business or trade, then always give full measure and weight to your customers. Do not fraudulently sell them things which are defective. Never diminish items from the agreed standards in terms of quality or quantity. [Al-Quran 6:152; 7:85; 11:84-85; 17:35; 26:181-183; 55:9]
وَأَوْفُوا الْكَيْلَ وَالْمِيزَانَ بِالْقِسْطِ
Give full measure and weight with justice [6:152].
فَأَوْفُوا الْكَيْلَ وَالْمِيزَانَ وَلَا تَبْخَسُوا النَّاسَ أَشْيَاءَهُمْ
And give full measure and weight and do not defraud* people from their things [7:85].
وَلَا تَنقُصُوا الْمِكْيَالَ وَالْمِيزَانَ
And do not diminish** the measure or the weight [11:84]
أَوْفُوا الْمِكْيَالَ وَالْمِيزَانَ بِالْقِسْطِ ۖ وَلَا تَبْخَسُوا النَّاسَ أَشْيَاءَهُمْ
And give full measure and weight and do not defraud people from their things [11:85]
وَأَوْفُوا الْكَيْلَ إِذَا كِلْتُمْ وَزِنُوا بِالْقِسْطَاسِ الْمُسْتَقِيمِ
And give full measure when you measure and weigh with an upright/even/straight balance [17:35]
أَوْفُوا الْكَيْلَ وَلَا تَكُونُوا مِنَ الْمُخْسِرِينَ
وَزِنُوا بِالْقِسْطَاسِ الْمُسْتَقِيمِ
وَلَا تَبْخَسُوا النَّاسَ أَشْيَاءَهُمْ
Give full measure and be not of those who cause loss (to others by fraud). And weight with an upright/even/straight balance. and do not defraud people from their things [26:181-183]
وَأَقِيمُوا الْوَزْنَ بِالْقِسْطِ وَلَا تُخْسِرُوا الْمِيزَانَ
And establish weight in justice and do not fall short in balance [55:9]
* bakhs(un) بخس means ‘deficient’, ‘defective’, ‘faulty’, ‘lessened’, ‘diminished’.
** naqs(un)  نقص means ‘a state of diminution’, ‘defect’, ‘defectiveness’, ‘deficiency’, ‘incompleteness’, ‘imperfection’.

Keep yourself clean from inside out. The concept of personal cleanliness and purity pertains not merely to the body but also to mind, heart and soul. It is not just the cleanliness of body that is important but in addition to regularly cleansing your body you should work on having a wholesome mind, a guiltless conscience and an inculpable set of emotions.
